Waukegan Illinois Secretary of State Facility

On August 10, 2026 I went to the Waukegan IL SoS. I had an appointment for DL renewal, eye test, written test and Real ID. I was greeted at the door. First was check-in, then photo, called up to the counter for eye test and paperwork, pay, then finally the written test. All the employees were pleasant, helpful and courteous. The facility was clean and organized. I was very surprised how the facility and employees were compared to my previous experience at Waukegan and Libertyville. I received my new DL and ID card (Real ID) ten days later! Great job all!

My experience at the Waukegan DMV was much better this time than it has been in the past. After a confusing start, the person in charge stepped in and was extremely helpful, professional, and knowledgeable. He helped me complete more than I originally planned in a single visit, which saved me from having to schedule another trip. While some staff members could be more welcoming and improve their customer service abilities, the leadership provided remarkable assistance. It made a big difference. Overall, this visit was a significant improvement, and I left feeling satisfied with the outcome.

Very efficient service at this location. They were very attentive and quick to get me in and out. My total visit only lasted 25 min and walked out with new registration and plates. 👍👍

Attempted to register a used motorcycle with existing IL plates - told it was impossible, then a Currency Exchange did it in minutes! Went to this SOS office to transfer title and registration for a motorcycle I purchased that already had Illinois plates (just renewed by previous owner). The clerk told me there was a "hold" on the title, then changed her story and said the VIN was "incorrect" and I needed a "new VIN," claiming the previous owner "did the registration wrong." This made no sense - the bike had been registered and renewed 3 times over 4 years by the state. When I pointed out the VIN matched what's stamped on the frame, she insisted the previous owner should have gotten a different VIN when plating this bike. She acted like I was trying to pull something over on her for simply requesting a routine title transfer. I called the SOS Title Services department as instructed - they found no issues preventing the transfer and told me to ask for a supervisor. I immediately returned to this facility and they refused to allow me to speak with a supervisor so I left absolutely pissed. I had heard good stuff about doing registration at Currency Exchange before so I decided to

I needed a new license ASAP because mine expired and I was headed out of town the next day. I went to the DMV off Lake Cook Rd but the line looked to be 1/4 mile long! So, I drove up to this location. When I arrived the line didn’t seem too bad, BUT I didn’t know I had to make an appointment online first! So, I went on my phone and made an appointment that was about 40min later. I went to my car and played video games until 10min before my appointment time. I was allowed inside and the entire process for a new drivers license (with change of address) took maybe 15minutes total. They took a new picture and updated my height and weight (and commented on my John Cena “like” physique (not really)). Anyway, I had a really positive experience at this location even though I didn’t know an appointment was needed.
